임계순 교수는 이화대학에서 중국사 전공으로 학사와 석사학위를 받은 후 미국 일리노이주립대학에서 박사학위를 취득. 2001년에 최고 권위의 인명사전인 “마르퀴즈 후즈 후”에 등재되었음. 《청조팔기주방흥쇠사淸朝八旗駐防興衰史》를 베이징 삼련사에서 1993년 출판하여 중국학계의 주목을 받음. 저서로는 《한국인의 짝사랑, 중국》,《청사: 만주족이 통치한 중국》,《중국의 여의주, 홍콩》,《중국인이 바라본 한국》, 《우리에게 다가온 조선족은 누구인가》, 《중국의 미래, 싱가포르 모델》 등이 있으며, 역서로는 《불멸의 지도자 등소평》이 있고 32편의 학술논문과 여러 편의 비학술논문 등이 있음. 

 

 

Based on my schedule and current work, the COVID¬-19 pandemic does not give me too much trouble. Even so, my friends often tell me that "It's frustrating." They cannot go out freely because of COVID-19, but I think it is nice to take time to meditate spiritually and pay more attention to my family. The post COVID-19 era will set the new tone of life. We cannot go back to the previous routine, which will be a good opportunity for anyone who wants to re-establish life goals based on what they want to value in the future. 

 

 

코로나 19 팬데믹이나 지금의 나의 나이는 일상 생활에 큰 영향을 주지 않는다고 말할 수 있다. 친구들은 코로나 19 때문에 외출을 마음대로 할 수 없다며 “답답하다” 고 불만스러워해도 나는 오히려 가족들에게 더 신경을 쓰며 영성을 위한 묵상의 시간도 가질 수 있어 좋은 것 같다. 포스트 코로나는 이전의 일상으로 절대로 되돌아갈 수 없을 것이라는 생각은 누구에게나 앞으로 무엇에 가치를 두고 살아야 할 것인지 삶의 목표를 다시 설정해 보는 좋은 계기를 제공해 주지 않을까.

 

 

  
 

First, Rapid Globalization and Educational Background / 글로벌 시대에 성공할 수 있었던 교육배경

When I was in college, I had enough Japanese proficiency to read Japanese novels, I intensively studied Chinese and English for graduate school entrance examinations, as well as Chinese literature at the level of reading - Analects, `Mencius, Great Learning and Records of the Grand Historian that was written by Sima Qian.
My first challenge in life was studying in the United States. In the process of getting a Ph.D. degree from University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, there were many difficulties, such as economic problems and childcare problems. Fortunately, I was lucky enough to receive scholarships from the American Association of University Women Educational Foundation (AAUW) and the Altrusa International Foundation. In addition, under the guidance of Professor Lloyd Eastman, who was famous for Chinese studies, I was able to write the world's first thesis that introduced the “Eight Banner Garrisons, one of the core rules of the Qing Dynasty created by the Manchus”. This paper attracted the attention of scholars majoring in Chinese history from all over the world. As a result, I was listed in Marquis Who’s Who, which is the world's most prestigious biographical dictionary in 2001, In addition, Professor Pamela Crosley, current professor of history at Dartmouth University, published The Manchurian History in 2013, in her preface to the Korean version of her book, she wrote: “Professor Im played a key role in ushering the United States into a new phase of study of the Qing Dynasty.... For the past 30 years, research experts on the Qing Dynasty and the Eight banner system in the United States have been greatly indebted to Professor Im for her work.”

 

나는 대학시절, 일본 소설을 비롯한 『논어』『맹자』 『대학』과 사마천의 『사기』를 읽을 수 있는 수준의 일어와 한문 실력을 갖추었고, 대학원 진학을 위해 중국어와 영어를 집중적으로 공부했다. 처음 도전은 미국 유학이었다. 일리노이 주립대학에서 박사학위를 받는 과정에서 경제적인 문제와 육아문제 등 난관이 많았지만, 다행히 운이 좋아 AAUW(American Association of University Women Educational Foundation) 와 Altrusa International Foundation에서 준 장학금으로 박사 학위를 받았다. 그리고 중국학으로 저명한 Lloyd Eastman 교수의 지도하에 세계 학계에 처음으로 ‘만주족이 창안한 청조의 핵심 통치술의 하나인 팔기주방’을 소개한 논문을 썼다. 이 논문으로 전 세계와 중국학계의 주목을 받았고 2001년에는 세계 최고 권위의 인명사전인 Marquis Who‘s Who 에 등재되었다. 현재 다트머스 대학교 역사교수로 재직하고 있는 크로슬리 교수는 2013년에 출판된 그의 저서 『만주족의 역사』의 한국어판 서문에 다음과 같은 내용을 실었다. “임계순교수는 미국의 청대사 연구가 새로운 국면에 진입하는데 핵심적인 역할을 했으며.... 지난 30년 동안 미국에서 등장한 청조와 팔기제도의 연구전문가들은 임 교수의 작업에 큰 신세를 졌다.” 

 

 

Second, Academic and Social Pursuits / 학술과 사회활동

  

The Year 1989
◆  I stayed at Pekinng University as a professor dispatched by the Korean Ministry of Education for one year with the help of a Chinese female aerospace scholar who visited Korea for a tour of the Asian Games in 1986
◆  My book entitled The Rise and Fall of Eight Banner Garrisons during the Qing Dynasty was published by the world-renowned Chinese publisher, Beijing Sanlian Shudian 
◆  While staying in China (September 1, 1991-August 22, 1992), a country with which  Korea did not yet have a diplomatic relationship, published Korean Unrequited Love, China , which China’s reality based on daily notes written during my stay in China.

◆  1986년 아시안게임 시찰을 위해 내한한 중국의 여성 우주항공 학자의 주선으로 1년간 한국교육부 파견교수로 북경대학에 체류

◆  After the invitation of Dr. Edwin Feulner, Chairman of the Heritage Foundation, as a Chinese expert, I accompanied Congressman Jack Kemp on a trip to China in 1994. We visited Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, and Hong kong. Congressman Kemp became the Vice-Presidential nominee of the United States Republican Party in 1996.

◆  After visiting Chris Pattern, the last British Governor-General, I published a book entitled China’s Ruyi zhu(如意珠), Hong Kong in 1997.

◆  I was a non-executive director of the East Asian Economic Research Institute, a foundation chaired by the late Prime Minister Nam Deok-woo, and had a chance to interact with Chinese and Japanese political, government, and academic figures in cooperation with the East-West Center in Hawaii.

◆  I received a translation request for My Father, Deng Xiaoping(我的鄧 鄧小平) from Deng Xiaoping's third daughter, Deng Rong. and it was published in 2001 by the Kim Young-sa publisher and entitled The Immortal Leader Deng Xiaoping.

◆  Qing History: China Ruled by Manchus, was published and selected as an excellent academic book by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, and later translated into Chinese and published in China in 2013.

◆  덩샤오핑의 딸 鄧榕으로부터 그녀가 저술한 『我的父親 鄧小平』의 번역 요청받아 『불멸의 지도자 등소평』 출판

◆  The Samsung Economic Research Institute asked me to write about how Chinese people perceive us. This motivated me to write and publish the book entitled Korea as Seen by the Chinese.

◆  As a Chinese expert from 2003 to 2007, I served as the chairman of the Social and Cultural Subcommittee of the China Forum at the Federation of Korean Industries. 
◆  To understand the mindset and life of Chinese-Korean people, I published the book entitled, Who are the Chinese Koreans Who Came to Us? 
◆  Within Hanyang University, I became the first female professor to be appointed the Dean of the College of Humanities as well as Director of the Paiknam Academic Information Center.

Third, my future plans in post the COVID-19 era / 코로나 19 팬데믹 이후 나의 미래 구상

The COVID-19 pandemic has pushed us forward in a pattern of digitalization that is different from how we lived before. Social distancing is becoming commonplace, and unnecessary outings and meetings are gradually disappearing. Luckily, it does not affect me that much as I am focused on researching, thinking, and writing about my academic interests. I am interested in supplementing the already published book based on my doctoral studies, The History of the Qing Dynasty, and I am also thinking of creating a YouTube subject called Manchurian Story  by  reinterpreting the History of the Qing Dynasty  so that high school students can understand it..I would also like to describe my view as a historian on Korean contemporary history through the life of my parents who were born during the period of Japanese colonial rule and received an education, and saw the fruits of economic growth after liberation and through the chaos of the Korean War.

 

In order to energize my writing activities, I need people who can communicate not only about my major but also about everyday life. Even before the COVID-19 pandemic, relevant chat rooms have helped me to maintain positive social interactions with a variety of personalities and group sizes ranging from 8 to 157 people.  After the COVID-19 pandemic, the first thing I did was to open a chat room with Catholic friends among high school alumni. Thirty people, including friends living in the United States and Canada, gather to share information about important religious events, words of the Father, Mass, prayers, and lectures, as well as to encourage each other's faith. As a result, I have a habit of meditating based on reading from the Bible every morning, constantly questioning the right life and values, and sharing opinions with friends in the chat room.

 

In particular, why did a pandemic such as COVID-19 occur? I continued to meditate and ponder about the Tower of Babel, the infinite desires of man, and environmental destruction and natural disasters. In the example of a family where three families live, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, more food is delivered to order than eating out, and the only plastic products out of the weekly trash consist of large garbage bags.

 

We must seriously face and overcome the challenges of modern civilization, which has continued to produce objects that will become the earth's garbage. Scholars, including Dr. Nam-Joon Cho of Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, have successfully completed the development of plastic substitutes from renewable and abundant, natural materials such as pollen. Plastic products that cover the planet with garbage and cause environmental disasters must now be disposed of as soon as possible. I am writing a letter to the Pope and other influential people around the world so that plastic substitutes to save the planet can be produced quickly, and I am mobilizing my time, ability, and manpower to ensure that this letter is delivered properly and to protect the environment. 

Regardless of whether it is the global era or the post COVID-19 digital eras, humans need to have a goal to create the right motivation and to be happy in an environmentally and spiritually prosperous environment. Therefore, there is a desperate need for education at all ages to set goals and achieve those goals to become responsible people in family and society.

 

 

코로나 19 팬데믹은 글로벌 시대와 다른 디지털 시대를 우리에게 껑충 앞당겨 주었다. 비대면의생활이 일상화되고 있고, 불필요한 외출과 만남이 서서히 사라지고 있다. 다행히 나는 이전 환경이 여전히 내 몸에 축적되어 있어 연구, 분석, 글 쓰는 일에 다시 매진하고 싶어 진다. 이미 출판된 전공분야 서적인 『청사』에 대하여 보충하고 싶은 의욕과 고등학교 학생들이 이해할 수 있도록 청사 내용을 쉽게 풀어 『만주인의 이야기』로 유튜브를 만들 생각도 하게 된다. 또 일제 강점기에 출생하여 교육을 받았고, 해방이후 혼란기와 6.25 동란을 거치면서 경제성장의 결실까지 보신 보모님의 생애를 통해 한국현대사에 대한 역사학자로서의 견해도 서술하고 싶다.

나의 이러한 저술활동에 활기를 불어넣기 위해서는 전공 분야 뿐만 아니라 일상에 필요한 대화를 나눌 수 있는 사람들이 필요하여 코로나 19 팬데믹 이전부터 157명부터 8명에 이르는 다양한 성격과 크기의 단톡방을 유지하고 있다. 코로나 19 팬데믹 발생 후 내가 제일 먼저 한 일은 고등학교 동창 중 가톨릭 친구들과 단톡방을 개설하여 미국과 카나다에 거주하는 친구들까지 30명이 모여 중요한 종교적 행사, 교부의 말씀, 미사, 기도, 강론에 대한 정보를 공유할 뿐만 아니라 서로의 신앙심을 격려하고 있다. 이러다 보니 매일 아침 성경말씀을 묵상하는 습관이 생겼고 올바른 삶과 가치관에 대하여 끊임없이 반문하고 단톡방 친구들과 의견을 나누고 있다.

특히 코로나 19같은 팬데믹은 왜 발생했을까? 바벨탑과 인간의 무한한 욕망, 그리고 환경파괴와 자연재해에 대하여 묵상과 숙고를 거듭하게 된다. 3식구가 사는 가정의 예를 보면 코로나19 팬데믹으로 외식보다 주문배달 음식이 늘면서 일주일에 버리는 쓰레기 중 플라스틱 제품만 큰 쓰레기 봉투를 가득 채운다. 
우리는 지구의 쓰레기가 될 물건을 계속 생산해온 현대문명을 심각하게 직시해야만 된다. 마침 싱가포르 난양공대 조남준 박사를 위시한 학자들이 꽃가루에서 플라스틱 대체물을 성공적으로 완성했다. 이제는 지구를 쓰레기로 뒤덮어 환경재난을 불러오는 플라스틱 제품을 하루빨리 폐기해야 한다. 나 는 지구를 살리기 위한 플라스틱 대체물이 하루 속히 생산될 수 있도록 교황님을 위시한 세계에 영향력 있는 인사들에게 편지를 쓰고 이 편지가 제대로 전달되어 환경을 구할 수 있도록 나의 시간, 능력, 인력을 동원하고 있다. 

글로벌 시대이든 포스트 코로나의 디지털 시대이든 상관없이 인간은 올바른 동기를 가지고 주변환경이나 정신적으로 좋은 환경에서 행복하기 위한 목표를 가져야 합니다. 따라서 어느 시대이든 간에 가정과 사회에 책임 있는 사람이 되기 위한 목표를 설정하고 그 목표를 달성하기 위해서는 모든 연령대의 교육이 절실히 필요합니다.
