Singer Somerz (real name: Kim Soo-yeon) grew up enjoying music and arts—under the influence of her mother, Yoon Hee-jung, a top jazz vocalist in and out of Korea. She graduated from an arts high school and majored in acting at university. In her twenties, she dreamed of becoming a singer. Throughout her extensive career in the entertainment industry, she performed in musicals and as a member of the music group Bubble Sisters. These days, she works as a vocal trainer for singers. She has recently joined the ranks of arts influencers through her vocal, acting and composing activities on YouTube and TikTok. Somerz now works across various platforms with more enthusiasm than ever before.

가수 소머즈 (본명 김수현) 국내외 최고의 재즈 보컬리스트인 어머니 윤희정 님의 영향으로 음악과 예술을 보고 들으며 자랐다. 그녀는 예고를 나와 연극영화과에서 연기전공으로 대학을 졸업했다. 20대 시절, 그녀는 가수의 꿈을 꾸었다. 뮤지컬 공연 및 버블시스터즈의 멤버로 활동하며 다양한 연예계 경력을 통해 현재는 가수를 트레이닝하는 보컬 트레이너로 자리를 잡았다. 그리고 최근 유튜브와 틱톡에서 작곡, 연기, 보컬 활동을 왕성히 하여 본격적으로 예술 인플루언서 대열에 합류했다. 다양한 플랫폼에서 그 어느 때 보다 왕성한 활동을 하고 있다.

 

Vocal Trainer Somerz 

As a child, I fell in love with music and the stage, and dreamed of becoming a singer. I now work as a vocal trainer for singers. I still love the stage and enjoy singing, but at the same time, I take pride in my work as a vocal trainer, teaching music methodology and training singers. I do not simply teach people how to sing well. I show them not only the basic vocal techniques but also how to create and convey artistic expressions. I believe that my role is to explain reasons for artistic expressions and to convey effectively the methodology of describing specific techniques. I feel a sense of duty as I train my students using my skills and watch them make progress. 

[ 보컬 트레이너 소머즈 ] 

어린 시절부터 무대를 사랑하고 음악과 함께 가수의 꿈을 꾸었다. 하지만 지금은 가수를 양성하는 유능한 보컬 트레이너로 자리를 잡게 되었다. 여전히 무대를 사랑하고 노래를 하는 순간 자체를 인조이하지만, 그에 못지않게 트레이너로서 음악적 방법론을 전달하고 가수를 양성하는 일에서 보람을 느낀다. 트레이너로서 나는 단순히 노래를 잘 부르는 것 뿐만 아니라, 학생에게 소리를 내는 기법부터 예술적 표현의 의미를 전달하고 이를  함께 만들어나가는 사람이다. 여기서 잘 전달하는 사람이란, 트레이니 에게 예술 표현의 이유를 설명하고 구체적인 기법을 묘사하는 방법론을 효과적으로 전달하는 사람이라 생각한다. 그리고 이 일로 자리를 잡은 지금, 내가 가진 능력으로 학생을 양성하고 학생들이 성장하는 모습을 보며 사명감을 느끼게 된다.
 

 

 

 

 

I Love Music and My Work

As much as I love work, I take good care of myself. In other words, I love work but at the same time, I never give up on my personal life. As a daughter, wife and human being, I must look after myself. Yet, those times serve as the driving force behind my work and arts. When I was in Bubble Sisters in my twenties, work was so hectic that I would barely get three hours of sleep a day. I let myself get lost in work, which was far from what I’d wanted to achieve as an artist. Now I’m able to control my life as an influencer teaching music and producing my own content. This way, I can hold on to both my work and myself, and the virtuous cycle of positive energy keeps me going to this day.

[ 나는 음악과 일을 정말 사랑한다.] 

일을 사랑하는 만큼 나 자신을 잘 돌본다 . 이는 일을 사랑함과 동시에 나 자신으로 사는 삶을 포기하지는 않는다는 말이다. 부모님의 딸, 남편의 아내 그리고 인간 김수현으로서 나 자신을 잘 돌봐야만 곧 그 시간들이 내가 일과 예술을 행하는데 원동력이 되기 때문이다. 20대 때 버블시스터즈의 멤버로 연예계 활동을 할 때 일이다. 하루 3시간도 못 자면서 활동을 했다. 하지만 그때의 나는 나 자신으로서 라이프를 잃었고 그때의 활동은 내가 지향하는 예술인의 활동이 아니었다. 그 이후, 음악을 가르치고 나 자신만의 컨텐츠를 생산하는 인플루언서로 성장하면서 내 삶을 내가 컨트롤 할 수 있게 되었다. 이로써 나는 일과 나 자신을 모두 지킬 수 있게 되었고, 여기서 만들어진 긍정적인 에너지의 선순환이 내가 지금까지 롱런할 수 있는 비결이다.

 

Gifted with Relative Pitch 

I gave myself the artist name Somerz because of my relative pitch. The fictional character Jaime Sommers can detect accurately the note of every sound she hears, and luckily, I have the same ability. Further, I can transform and arrange different music notes to create melodies. My mother, Yoon Hee-jung, has had a huge influence on me. Although I’m her daughter, she didn’t let me perform on the main stage right away. Instead, she made me start off as a chorus singer. Looking back, that experience taught me how to plan and produce stage music with attention to every detail including chorus singing. As a result, I can create my own content from A to Z using my perfect pitch and ability to produce a performance. 

[ 천재적인 재능 상대음감 ] 

활동명 소머즈는 내가 가진 상대음감 능력 때문에 짓게 된 이름이다. 영화 캐릭터로 더 유명한 소머즈는 일단 소리를 들으면 그 음을 정확하게 캐치하는 능력을 지닌 사람인데, 감사하게도 내가 그렇다. 그리고 나는 그 음을 멜로디로 변주하고 편곡해 만들어낼 수 있다. 이런 능력을 갖춘 데에는 타고난 것도 있지만 윤희정의 영향도 크다. 어머니 윤희정은 딸이지만 본인의 콘서트 무대에 나를 바로 세워주지 않으셨다. 그녀는 나를 백코러스부터 시작하게 하셨는데, 메인무대에 서게 된 지금 돌켜보니, 이런 방침이 내가 코러스 기획부터 공연 음악의 구조를 만들고 기획하는 데 큰 도움이 되었다. 그리고 그 덕분에 나는 절대적인 음감 능력과 더불어 공연을 기획할 수 있기 때문에 나만의 컨텐츠를 A to Z 만들어낼 수 있게 되었다. 

 

 

 

I Immerse Myself in Arts

When I come across my favorite content or genre (especially music), I tend to immerse myself in it. Rather than enjoying a wide range of works, I focus on one piece that strikes a chord with me and listen to it hundreds of times. I value quality over quantity. I try to gain a more profound understanding of each work, which, I believe, enriches my own music in turn. In addition, I tend to start working on any inspiration I get immediately. Inspirations may arise at any time—when you’re watching the TV or having a meal. I love the entire process of reinterpreting and unravelling them musically. That’s my own artistic practice, which allows me to create my own artistic color. 

[ 나는 예술에 몰입한다. ]  

나는 좋아하는 컨텐츠나 장르 (특히 음악) 을 발견하면 굉장히 몰입하는 편이다. 여러가지 작품을 다양하게 즐기기보단, 마음에 드는 한 작품을 만나면 수 십 번, 수 백 번 듣고 즐기며 몰입한다. 양보다는 질을 중시한다. 그를 통해 작품의 감동을 보다 깊이 이해하려고 노력한다. 그리고 이 방법이 곧 나의 음악을 더욱 풍부하게 만드는 방법이라고 생각한다. 그리고 더불어 영감은 떠오르는 즉시 제작하는 편이다. 일상생활에서 TV를 보거나 식사를 하다가도 영감은 찾아온다. 그러면 나는 그것을 음악적으로 재해석하고 풀어내는 모든 과정을 사랑한다. 그것이 나만의 예술적 활동이고 그게 나만의 예술적 컬러를 만드는 방법이다.

 

If You Have an Inspiration or a Vision, Put It into Action Now

On several occasions, I have delayed putting my artistic inspiration into action in order to give myself time to mull over it. YouTube and TikTok were such cases. Even after I came up with the idea of creating my own music and sharing it with the public, I hesitated for a long time, worried over the specifics like filming and editing. Finally, last year, I decided to give it a go. I began everything from scratch, filming and editing on my own, and now I’m pretty good at it. As a result, I’ve been able to expand my artistic realm and engage with more people as an influencer. I’d like to impart the following message to the next generation of female leaders: “The longer you hesitate, the more you’ll regret later. If you have an inspiration or a vision, put it into action now. You may be clumsy at first, but you’ll learn and make progress. Those times and efforts will shape you into a unique artist.”

[ 비젼과 영감이 떠오른다면 지금 바로 시도해 보세요 ] 

예술적 활동에 영감을 받아도 고민하는 시간으로 시작을 미루게 된 경우가 있다. 나에게는 대표적으로 유투브와 틱톡이 그것이었다. 나만의 음악을 기획하고 만들고 대중과 공유해 보고자 하는 아이디어가 떠올랐지만, 촬영 편집 등등 여러 가지 걱정이 앞서 오랜 시간 망설였다. 하지만 작년에 일단 시작해 보자! 라는 마음으로 혼자서 서툴지만 기획부터 촬영과 편집을 시작했고 지금은 꽤 능숙해졌다. 그리고 그 덕분에 지금의 나는 더 다양한 예술 활동을 하고 있고, 더 많은 팬과 소통할 수 있는 인플루언서가 되었다. 그래서 나는 차세대 여성 리더들에게 이런 말을 해주고 싶다  “ 늦게 시작하면 아쉬움만 늘어날 거예요, 비젼과 영감이 떠오른다면 지금 바로 시도해 보세요. 처음엔 서툴겠지만 부딪히고 성장하다 보면, 그 시간과 노력이 모여 나만의 컬러를 가진 아티스트가 될 수 있어요.”
